New to Canada

Life eventChecked October 2, 2026

Newcomers can get several benefits soon after arrival, but most require a tax filing record. Getting a SIN and registering with the CRA early is the key.

Your checklist

  1. Get your Social Insurance Number

    Almost every benefit needs it.

  2. Apply for the Canada Child Benefit if you have children

Newcomers apply with a form and proof of status and income.

  3. Use the new-resident route for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit

You may qualify before filing your first full return.

  4. File a tax return every year, even with little or no income

Income-tested benefits are based on it.

  5. In Québec, apply for Allocation famille

Temporary residents may qualify after 18 months in Canada.

  6. Check child care and housing help in your province

    Status requirements vary by program.

Timing

Apply for CCB as soon as you have eligible status and a child lives with you. File your first tax return by April 30 the year after arrival.

Province-specific notes

  • Quebec: Allocation famille and the solidarity credit have their own status rules.
  • British Columbia: SAFER and RAP require 12 months of BC residency.
