Ontario Trillium Benefit

The Ontario Trillium Benefit combines three credits that help with energy costs, property tax or rent, and sales tax. You claim it on your income tax return and the CRA pays it.
How muchFor July 2026 to June 2027: Ontario Sales Tax Credit up to $378 per adult and per child under 19; Energy and Property Tax Credit up to $1,307 (ages 18-64) or $1,488 (65+); Northern Ontario Energy Credit up to $189 single or $290 families. Amounts shrink with income.
When it's paidPaid around the 10th of each month starting July. If the yearly total is $500 or less it comes as one July payment; above $500 you can choose monthly or a single payment in June of the following year.
Who qualifies
- You live in Ontario
- You qualify for at least one of: Ontario Sales Tax Credit, Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, or Northern Ontario Energy Credit
- You filed your tax return for the prior year
- For the property tax part, you paid rent or property tax on your principal residence (or lived on a reserve, in long-term care or a student residence)
How to apply
- File your income tax return by April 30
- Complete the ON-BEN application form included in the return
- Enter rent or property tax paid and your address
- Set up direct deposit with the CRA
What to have ready
- Rent receipts or property tax bill amounts
- Address of your principal residence
- Notice of assessment from prior years if correcting
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting the ON-BEN form
- Not filing because income was zero
- Entering rent for the wrong address or period
