Ontario Child Benefit

OntarioFamilyChecked October 2, 2026

The Ontario Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment for low- and moderate-income families raising children under 18. It is paid together with the federal Canada Child Benefit, so there is no separate Ontario application.

How much

Up to $1,760 per child per year (July 2026 to June 2027 benefit year), reduced as adjusted family net income rises.

When it's paid

Monthly, combined with the Canada Child Benefit payment from the CRA.

Who qualifies

  • You live in Ontario
  • You care for at least one child under 18
  • You are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit
  • You (and your spouse or partner) file a tax return every year, even with no income
  • Your adjusted family net income is low enough that the benefit is not fully reduced

How to apply

  1. Apply for the Canada Child Benefit with the CRA (at birth registration, through My Account, or by form)
  2. File your tax return each year, and make sure your spouse or partner files too
  3. The CRA assesses the Ontario Child Benefit automatically
  4. Keep your address, marital status and custody information current with the CRA

What to have ready

  • Social Insurance Number
  • Child's birth registration or proof of birth
  • Proof of status in Canada if newly arrived

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Not filing a tax return because you had no income
  • Only one partner filing
  • Not updating the CRA after a separation or custody change
Still being confirmed: Ontario page does not state the exact income at which the reduction starts; use the CRA calculator. Check the official page for the latest details.
