Ontario Electricity Support Program

OntarioEnergyChecked October 2, 2026

OESP gives lower-income households a monthly credit directly on their electricity bill. The Ontario Energy Board runs the program and you apply once every two years (five for some seniors and people on CPP disability).

How much

Monthly bill credit of about $35 to $75 depending on income and household size; enhanced credits of about $52 to $113 a month for Indigenous customers, homes with electric heating, or people using certain medical devices.

When it's paid

Credit applied on each electricity bill, not cash. Usually appears 6 to 8 weeks after applying.

Who qualifies

  • You are a residential electricity customer in Ontario, or live in a separately metered unit
  • Your household income is within the limits for your household size (roughly up to $71,000 for larger households)
  • All household members' income can be verified through the CRA

How to apply

  1. Gather a recent electricity bill and household member details
  2. Apply online at OESP.ca, by mail, or through an intake agency
  3. Give consent to verify income with the CRA
  4. Wait 4 to 6 weeks for approval
  5. Reapply before your enrolment period ends

What to have ready

  • Electricity bill (account number)
  • Names and birthdates of everyone in the household
  • SIN for each member 18 and over

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out household members
  • Not reapplying when the 2-year period ends
  • Not asking for the enhanced credit when eligible
