Canada Learning Bond (CLB)

FederalSavingsChecked October 2, 2026

The Canada Learning Bond puts free money into an RESP for children from low-income families. You do not have to contribute anything.

How much

$500 in the first eligible year, then $100 for each later eligible year up to age 15. Lifetime maximum $2,000.

When it's paid

Deposited into the child's RESP.

Who qualifies

  • The child was born in 2004 or later
  • The child has a SIN and an RESP
  • Family income is at or below the limit (e.g. $58,523 for 1–3 children, July 2026–June 2027)

How to apply

  1. Get the child a SIN
  2. Open an RESP (no contribution needed)
  3. Ask the provider to request the CLB
  4. File tax returns every year

What to have ready

  • Child's SIN
  • Primary caregiver's SIN

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking you must contribute money
  • Not filing taxes, which blocks eligibility
  • Waiting too long; past entitlements are paid only after opening an RESP
